There is no right age to begin piano lessons for all children.
The answer is that it depends on the child.
Every child develops at a different rate, and there is no universal age to start piano lessons.
The typical age range given for starting structured music learning goes from 3 to 8, depending on who you ask. Kids can start formal music training as early as age 3, when brain circuits for learning music mature. In fact, studies at the University of California suggest that taking music lessons at age 3 can increase your child’s brain power.
Most teachers say that for most children, ages 6-7 is a great time to Start Piano, but I have taught younger children before.
But, every child is different and you know your child’s interests and abilities best.
When can we start piano lessons?
- They can focus on a book or task for 5 to 10 minutes. All of my beginner lessons are 30 minutes in length.
- They expressed an interest in taking music lessons.
Children who have expressed an interest in taking piano are more likely to be motivated to practice. Children under the age of five who show an interest in the piano should be allowed to explore and learn on their own time table.
- They can follow basic instructions.
Your child needs to be able to follow simple instructions for practicing the assigned material.
If you’re not sure whether or not your child is ready to start lessons, book them two or three lessons and see how they get on.
Parental knowledge of music is not required. Rather, parents need to be available to listen to their child practice.
Children rarely practice on their own. They need reminders and encouragement to do so. Your support is needed.
